Aspen-VFR-PFD SmallAspen Avionics has received FAA certification for the VFR version of its "Evolution" primary flight display (PFD), the first glass panel upgrade designed specifically for pilots flying under visual flight rules.

The question we can hear you all asking is "why offer a VFR-only PFD?" Aspen says "its market research shows VFR pilots and non-current IFR pilots represent over 50 percent of the flying population". This might be true of the US but we wonder if this percentage is much higher in the UK and Europe. John Uczekaj, Aspen president and CEO went on to say, "This is a segment of the flying public that has been underserved with an affordable glass panel solution."

Priced at $4,995 (£3,118.26 / €3,948.75) the VFR PFD can be converted for IFR use through a simple software upgrade, the Aspen website says.

Options offered with the display include XM weather, traffic alerts (TAS), Stormscope lightning, synthetic vision (the unit must first be upgraded to the IFR-capable EFD1000 Pro version) and ADS-B capability.

Apsen said the VFR Display unit started delivery in September 2014 and we await news of potential certication in EASA land.
